No.1 Hatyai Must-Eat: Thai-Chinese Old-School Boat Noodles

Well, this isn’t another post out there worshiping a checklist of to-eat’s in Hatyai, Thailand. I don’t normally post about food in my blog, but there is this ONE eatery in Hatyai I just have to recommend to everyone, and it’s not without reasons.

Firstly, this Thai-Chinese old-school boat noodles restaurant is run by my very own good friend, Pom, who always serves me with not one, but two special bowls of beef or pork noodles in generous portions whenever I go visit him.

But to recommend something which I don’t genuinely feel is good isn’t my style, and I don’t do this just because the eatery is run by my friend.

All I can guarantee is the fact that this decade-old restaurant, famously known as Chen Loong Boat Noodles (成龙面条 ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือเฉินหลง ใกล้ห้าง Lee Gardens), is probably the best and the most popular one you will ever find in this Southernmost city of Thailand neighboring Malaysia’s Kedah and Perlis.

Named after world-famous Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, Chen Loong Boat Noodles is situated right in the city center of Hatyai, only less 3 minutes’ walk from the famous Lee Gardens Plaza usually thronged by Malaysian tourists.

And no, contrary to some of the information available on the Internet, no one in Pom’s family is named Chen Loong.

Below I attach a map showing the direction from Lee Gardens Plaza to Pom’s Chen Loong Boat Noodles restaurant:

If you’re into beef, their noodles comes with perfectly-done, tender beef and beef brisket. But if you’re not, you can always opt for the pork variation, served “dry” or in soup stock.

The stock isn’t just ordinary stock – it’s actually thick, savory and spicy broth enriched with cow’s or pig’s blood, known as nam tok น้ำตก (or loosely translated as “waterfall”).

But don’t worry if you dread the idea of having blood in your soup, because unless you request, my friend usually won’t include it for Malaysian customers who may not be used to the strong flavour. While local customers would be served a thicker variation of the broth, it is also usually adjusted to be less spicy to cater to the palate of Malaysians.

The noodles are best eaten with beansprouts and basil leaves, hence the bowl of beansprouts and basil that is served along. If you want your dish a bit more salty/sour/spicy – or even sweeter, you can always help yourself with the four Thai condiments on the table.

And oh, if you like your already flavourful dish extra flavourful, just grab a packet of pork rinds from the tray, crunch them a little, and sprinkle them on your dish.

You can also order just the soup sans the noodles, with an extra bowl of rice. Pom and his workers speak basic Mandarin and English, so you don’t have to struggle to order your food.

Chen Loong Boat Noodles (成龙面条 ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือเฉินหลง ใกล้ห้าง Lee Gardens) situated near Lee Gardens Plaza, Hatyai, is open almost daily, but off on certain days of the month. The operating hours are from 7.30am to 3.30pm Thai time.

Be prepared to have to wait a little as Chen Loong Boat Noodles is usually thronged with many customers. If you’re driving into Hatyai, please be mindful not to park your car on the side of the road right in front of the row of shops where Chen Loong Boat Noodles is located, as the police is always clamping cars parked on that side of the road.
